Suffolk County Issues Bathing Advisory After Heavy Rainfall
Due to heavy rainfall on Sunday and Monday, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services has issued an advisory against bathing at 60 beaches. The only South Fork beach on the list is Havens Beach in Sag Harbor Village.
Like the other beaches on the list, Havens Beach receives stormwater runoff from the surrounding area. It is located in an enclosed embayment with limited tidal flushing.
The department recommends that people avoid swimming there until two successive tidal cycles — a 24-hour period — after the rain stopped. If the department finds elevated bacterial levels beyond that period, the advisory will remain in effect.
For the latest information on affected beaches, call the Bathing Beach Hotline at 631-852-5822 or the department's office of ecology at 631-852-5760 during normal business hours, or visit the website link: suffolkcountyny.gov/health.
