How to Spot Online Scammers
Online scams and how to spot them will be covered at the East Hampton Library on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Rip-off schemes have become highly sophisticated (see this week's “Relay” column) and, with access to ill-gotten personal data, can initially appear quite real.
One key idea that will be stressed on Tuesday is that anyone or any entity demanding that money be sent via a gift card code, even seemingly for a family member, is involved in a criminal con. Typical ruses include fake Internal Revenue Service fines and “free” prize offers.
