Kevin Barry, who coaches East Hampton High’s boys cross-country team, tried, without success, to bring in some ringers for the boys and girls teams’ inaugural Montauk Mile on Sunday, but it was a well-contested race notwithstanding, auguring well for the future.

Amanda Calabrese, who is soon to add Japan and New Zealand to a growing list of countries in which she has vied in lifesaving and track competitions, will oversee a girls-only surfing camp in Montauk this summer, beginning July 1.

A rower in college and a swimmer in high school, Matthew Connelly, 23, of New York City, won the Robert J. Aaron Montauk Triathlon Saturday in an overall time of 1 hour, 56 minutes, and 44.4 seconds, finishing two and a half minutes ahead of 27-year-old Tim Steiskal of Brookhaven, who repeated as this race’s runner-up.

Lara Lowlicht, a 15-year-old East Hampton High School sophomore and the poster child for Stony Hill Stables’ riding scholarship program, is working for her keep at the Amagansett stables now and improving steadily as a rider, her trainer, Marisa Bush, said during a conversation there the other day.

As tennis enthusiasts swung away on the East Hampton Indoor-Outdoor Club’s many courts this past weekend, Randi Cherill, an Amagansett physical therapist who has for the past 15 years served as East Hampton High School’s trainer, was on the deck, ready to help prevent or to treat injuries.
