He Backed Onto Sidewalk

A 60-year-old Sag Harbor man was arrested on a drunken-driving charge after backing a Jeep onto a Main Street sidewalk in that village in front of a police officer.

John Scocco was driving north on Main Street on Sunday at about 1:50 a.m. in a 2018 Jeep, when he suddenly stopped and put the vehicle into reverse. It went onto the sidewalk in front of 63 Main Street.

Police said when Mr. Scocco got out of the car he appeared intoxicated and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and unsafe backing, a violation. He was held for morning arraignment and released on his own recognizance.

In other arrests reported this week, a Flanders man was charged with displaying a forged vehicle inspection certificate, a misdemeanor.

Police stopped Efrain E. Alpe-Perez, 35, on Montauk Highway near Atlantic Avenue in Amagansett on Jan. 5 at about 7:30 a.m. The 2019 inspection sticker on his 2006 Dodge van was for a 1995 Mitsubishi. He was released on his own recognizance and is set to appear in court on Wednesday.
