Ecuadorean Detained After Arrest

A Springs man was picked up by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Friday from the Suffolk County jail in Riverside, one day after he was scheduled to be released. He had been held on a detainer request.

According to Rachael Yong Yow, an ICE spokeswoman, “Andy Michael Sanchez-Jaramillo, a citizen and national of Ecuador, entered the United States legally in January 2017 on a non-immigrant visa, but failed to depart the United States in accordance with the terms of the visa.”

Mr. Sanchez-Jaramillo had been arrested by East Hampton Town police on Feb. 17 on a misdemeanor drunken-driving charge, as well as a felony charge of unlicensed driving. He had not been able to make bail. Because of the felony charge, the district attorney was required to obtain an indictment by Feb. 2 or release him.

However, instead of being released, he was arrested again by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department and transferred to an area in the county jail rented by ICE.

Mr. Sanchez-Jaramillo, who has now been moved to an ICE detention center in Hudson County, N.J., “will remain in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings,” Ms. Yong Yow said Tuesday.
