Dorothy Marie Avallone, 85, who had worked in upper management at the Stern’s department store in East Hampton, died of congestive heart failure at Casa de la Luz Hospice in Tucson on Jan. 26.
Mrs. Avallone, who was known as Dotty, lived in Seaford and on Staten Island before coming to East Hampton in 1973. Three years later, she took a job at Stern’s and remained with the store for 17 years. She and her husband retired to Oro Valley, Ariz., in 1998.
She was born in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, on Aug. 27, 1932, to Anthony J. and Leana Demes. She and her sister, the late Gladys R. Walla, grew up in Bensonhurst, where she graduated from New Utrecht High School. When she was young and single, she worked at Chase Manhattan Bank. Two years after marrying Silvestro Avallone, on Oct. 9, 1954, she left the bank to focus on their family, which came to include three sons, Eric, Karl, and Mark.
Her husband died in 2014. Her sons, Eric Avallone of Los Angeles, Karl Avallone of East Hampton, and Mark Avallone of Oswego, N.Y., survive. She leaves three granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
A service was held at Adair Funeral Home-Avalon Chapel in Oro Valley on Jan. 21.
The family has suggested contributions in Mrs. Avallone’s name to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas 75231.
