For Autism Emergencies

A free workshop on preparing first responders for an emergency involving someone with autism will take place at the Hampton Bays Middle School on April 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. The training session is for emergency medical technicians, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and hospital and school personnel.

Bill Cannata of the Autism and Law Enforcement Education Coalition will present information on how to identify characteristics and behaviors of a person with autism and how to effectively communicate with him or her. He will also discuss how to build relationships with people with autism spectrum disorder.

The event is sponsored by several organizations, including the Flying Point Foundation for Autism, based in Water Mill, Southampton Hospital, and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. That department’s Division of Emergency Medical Services can be called at 631-852-5080 to register. General inquiries can be emailed to hello@fpf4autism.org.
