Seed Swap Saturday in Riverhead
Growers, get ready! An all-day program of presentations, panel discussions, and a seed swap will take place on Saturday at the Riverhead campus of Suffolk Community College.
The event has been organized by the Long Island Regional Seed Consortium and will feature members of the Shinnecock Nation and Blossom Sustainable Development, a Shinnecock-owned nonprofit, along with the Feisty Acres bobwhite quail release program and East End farmers in a meet-up co-hosted by the Amagansett Food Institute.
Sessions will be held on adaptive gardening and horticulture therapy, community gardens and diversity, and seed libraries.
The seed swap will happen in the afternoon. Those taking part have been invited to supply vegetable, flower, or herb seeds that have not been crossed with other types, commercial excess seed from last year, tubers, fruit scions, and bulbs to exchange. Attendees without seeds will be welcomed, as well, and they will be able to walk away with a selection to plant this year.
The entry fee is $20 per person, $30 per family, to attend all of the programming, including the seed swap. The fee to attend only the afternoon seed swap, which starts at 1 p.m., is $5. The campus is at 121 Speonk-Riverhead Road. Check-in is at 9 a.m. for those attending the morning presentations.
