First Day of School Varies This Year Thanks to Labor Day

With Labor Day falling later this year than it has in a while, the first day of school varies for students in a few local districts.

Whereas most students typically start school the day after Labor Day, students in Montauk will begin school on Sept. 3, the Thursday prior to Labor Day. The typical school hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. will be in effect.

Students in Sag Harbor will start school on Wednesday, Sept. 9, and will see their start times adjusted 10 minutes later this year. At Pierson Middle and High School the school day will run from 7:35 a.m. to 2:36 p.m.; at the Sag Harbor Elementary School the day will run from 8:45 a.m. to 3:20 p.m.; the prekindergarten morning session will be 8:50 to 11:30, and the afternoon prekindergarten session will be 12:30 to 3:10 p.m.

In the East Hampton School District, students will start school on Sept. 8, the day after Labor Day, but there will be a two-hour delay for students while the superintendent holds a meeting for teachers and staff in the morning. High school students will begin their day at 9:40 a.m., and middle school students at 9:45 a.m. Elementary school students will start at 10:35 a.m. However, kindergarten students will attend school for three half-days between Sept. 8 and Sept. 10, with their first full day scheduled for Sept. 11. The regular school day hours for the rest of the school year will be in effect: 7:40 a.m. to 2:26 p.m. at the high school, 7:30 a.m. to 2:40 p.m. at the middle school, and 8:25 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. at the elementary school.

Students in Springs, Bridgehampton, Amagansett, Sagaponack, and Wainscott will begin school on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The Springs School's normal class hours are from 8:20 a.m. to 3:11 p.m. Bridgehampton's school day runs from 7:45 a.m. to 2:40 p.m., and in Amagansett it's from 8:10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. In Sagaponack, typical hours are 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and in Wainscott school runs from 8 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.
